FOUR BASIC NEEDS

We all have needs that need to be met if we want to be happy, healthy people.  The following exercise is based on work by William Glasser and it will give you the chance to find out how balanced your life is.

Our four basic needs are:

1. love

2. power

3. freedom

4. fun

The circle has four equal parts that represent each need.   If any one of these needs is not being met, then the circle is incomplete.

For each of the following panels, think about at least:

  1. Three people you love = this can include your family, friends, your favorite pet

  2. Three things you do well (power) = maybe it is being a good friend, playing music, playing sports, fixing things, cooking and baking, or public speaking

  3. Three choices you make (freedom) = Do you get to pick your friends?  Do you pick out the clothes you are going to wear each day?   Do you choose to go to school?  Do you choose to be kind to other people rather than be a bully?

  4. Three things you do for fun = maybe it is hanging out with your friends, playing sports, play games, or going to the movies

Are some of them harder than others?   Maybe by doing this exercise you see something you would like to do differently in your life?  The following section will help you plan how to do this.
